Introducing The Tenant Project: Making Tenant Voices Count

Across England and Wales, thousands of renters are quietly putting up with illegal treatment – unfair and untrue deposit deductions, dangerous disrepair, no gas safety, harassment, and more – all because they don’t know their rights, or worse, they think no one will listen. Plus, the huge factor that enforcement of these laws is paper thin. Tenants rarely get any compensation.

At Tenant Angels, we’ve been helping tenants for years. But we knew something was missing: a way to show just how widespread these problems really are, backed by real stories, real data, and real people.

That’s why we’ve launched The Tenant Project.

The Tenant Project is a nationwide campaign to collect the stories that too often go unheard. Whether you’re a tenant who’s been treated unfairly, misled, or simply let down by your landlord or letting agent – we want to hear from you.

It’s simple:

  • You fill out a short, anonymous survey
  • We record what went wrong (no names, no addresses)
  • We show the public and the government just how broken the system is
  • Together, we push for better enforcement of the laws we already have

No ads. No hidden agenda. Just a campaign to make sure the law works like it’s meant to.

The law in England and Wales gives tenants a lot of rights – but rights don’t mean much without enforcement. Too many landlords and agents break the law because they know:

  • The tenant won’t challenge them
  • Local councils are underfunded and overstretched
  • There’s rarely any real consequence

That needs to change. We don’t need new laws. We need accountability. And to get that, we need proof – proof that what’s happening isn’t just one bad landlord here or there. It’s a pattern.

That’s where you come in.

Our goals are simple, but vital:

Shine a light on what’s really happening in the rental sector
We’re turning tenant experiences into data – showing how often the law is broken, where, and in what ways.

Demand real enforcement from local and national authorities
We’re building a body of evidence that councils, journalists, and politicians can’t ignore.

Help tenants understand their rights
Alongside collecting stories, we’re sharing practical tips, real-world examples, and advice to help you stand up for yourself – or help someone you care about.

Every story matters. Whether you’ve had a terrible landlord or just a small issue that went ignored, it adds to the bigger picture.

By submitting your experience, you’re helping:

  • Other tenants recognise red flags
  • Us expose repeat offenders
  • Create pressure for proper enforcement

We just want the facts: What happened? When? What law do you think was broken?

It takes 2–3 minutes to complete the survey – and it could help protect thousands of renters just like you.

The Tenant Project isn’t about shouting into the void. It’s about tenants coming together to say:

“The law exists. We just want it to be followed.”

If you’ve ever felt powerless as a tenant – this is your way to push back.

Let’s make sure that when a landlord breaks the law, someone actually does something about it.

The Tenant Project
What is The Tenant Project?

The Tenant Project is a campaign launched by Tenant Angels to collect real stories from renters across England and Wales who’ve experienced legal breaches or unfair treatment. These stories are used to raise awareness, drive change, and push for better enforcement of existing tenant laws.

Is The Tenant Project only for serious legal issues?

Not at all. Whether you’ve faced serious landlord harassment or a smaller issue like delayed repairs, your experience matters. All stories help us build a clearer picture of how often tenant laws are broken – and how little is done about it.

Do I have to give my name or address to take part?

The survey itself is anonymous. We do collect a name and email address to ensure the entry is valid, as the data must be verified, but nothing is published that could be used to identify you unless you choose to provide it. Your safety and privacy come first.

How will my story be used?

Your report will be included as part of an anonymised data set that shows where and how tenant rights are being ignored. We’ll use this to inform national reports, campaigns, media outreach, and calls for stronger enforcement.

Can I still take part if my issue happened in years ago?

Yes – whether it happened last week or several years ago, your story is still valid. The goal is to show long-standing patterns of neglect, lawbreaking, and under-enforcement, so past experiences are just as important as current ones.
